Bug O Nay Ge Shig High School students braved cool, windy weather to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Sugar Point by visiting the battle site.
The Battle of Sugar Point took place during the first week of Oct. 1898 and is known as the last battle between a band of Indians and the U.S. Army. It involved the Bear Island Pillagers (Leech Lakers) and an elder named Bugonaygeshig (not the same as the two Bugonaygeshigs who were leaders of the Gull Lake Band). The Bear Island Pillagers were victorious in spite of being greatly outmanned and outgunned.

2nd Grade student enjoying some time outside and having fun with pine needles!

The Bug O Nay Ge Shig Lady Silver Eagles tasted victory in their final home game against Hill City with scores of 25-11, 16-25, 25-15, and 25-19. Congratulations!

3rd grade students at Bug O Nay Ge Shig School are already preparing for the winter games. The first step in participating in the “Snowsnake Competition” is to find the perfect stick. So that meant an expedition to the woods surrounding the school.

A group of Bug O Nay Ge Shig seniors recently took a field trip to Fort Ripley where they ate with the troops. Following the presentation and tour, they picked enough sage to meet the school’s needs for a whole year.

Biology Class students at Bug O Nay Ge Shig practiced going through the steps of the scientific method with a bubble blowing lab.

We were very excited to have Governor Walz and his team visit the school on Wednesday. They graciously took time to tour the school and meet some of our students.

Students in the Seasonal Activities class at Bug O Nay Ge Shig School prepared for the annual Fall Feast and Powwow by parching, jigging, and fanning the wild rice gathered from rice camp. They also cleaned and prepared several whitefish. The Feast and Powwow was held last Fri. with many community members enjoying the meal and powwow.
